‘Practical EYFS Handbook’ by Penny Tassoni

Penny Tassoni’s Practical EYFS Handbook is very much a training manual of its time. The Early Years Foundation Stage is the most recent innovative strategy to guide and shape how young children are offered care and education in order that they meet the Outcomes laid down within the Every Child Matters agenda.

It is a logical, progression through the aspects of working with children and their families. It explores the importance, for example, of a smooth settling in of new children. It emphasises the uniqueness of each child.

The structure of each chapter links to ages ranges, developmental phases and the Foundation Curriculum. There are many suggestions and creative ideas for workers and professionals within early years’ settings including reception class. It is specifically designed for the UK market where these strategies are in operation.

There are numerous illustrations and tasks to keep even the most reluctant student busy and on-target. I would suggest that this text book has a place on the shelves of students and practitioners alike. It is strongly coloured and is like an Aladdin’s cave for grown-ups. Dip into it. You will be pleasantly surprised.
